Meek Mill Calls Out U.S. Mental Health Crisis After Philadelphia Shooting

Meek Mill is calling for more attention on America’s mental health crisis, urging people not to reduce violent crimes to just race.

On Wednesday, the Philly rapper reacted to two tragedies—one in his city and another in Charlotte—that were met with very different coverage online.

Replying to a post about a white man allegedly shooting and killing a Black woman in downtown Philadelphia, Meek questioned why that story wasn’t being pushed as hard as one from Charlotte, where a Black man was accused of stabbing a white Ukrainian refugee.

“It’s a mental health crisis going on and they making it about race or color… this woman was killed downtown center city by a bum in Philly … Why is the white woman getting stabbed by a black man the only story running heavily .. violence is violence! Rip to them too!” he wrote.

Meek stressed that zeroing in on race when crimes happen only distracts from the real issue—untreated mental illness fueling violence nationwide.

The Dreams and Nightmares rapper has long used his platform to spotlight systemic problems like poverty and criminal justice reform. He’s also been vocal about mental health, weaving the topic into songs like “Trauma” and “Survivor’s Guilt,” where he processed grief, addiction, and the lasting impact of incarceration.

Just last year, he reminded fans on Twitter: “Mental health awareness is very important amongst us from seeing so much on these phones! Stay strong chin up chest out!”
