Elon Musk is getting personal about his rocky relationship with Grimes in Kanye West’s upcoming documentary In Whose Name?
In a clip obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Musk appears backstage after one of Ye’s Miami shows, complimenting the stage setup before the two lounge in a cushion-filled room. The conversation shifts unexpectedly when Musk jokes, “So are you and Kim like off and on or something? Or, I don’t know, it’s hard to tell.” West stays quiet, prompting Musk to reflect on his own love life.
“Claire and I, Grimes,” Musk begins, “We’re sort of … you know, in the same text stream, she’s like, ‘I love you.’ And then, like, you know, a day later, like, ‘I hate you.’” Musk laughs, glancing at Ye for guidance.
“And what do you do?” West asks. Musk admits, “Whoa, OK. Yeah, exactly.” Ye simply shrugs it off with, “I don’t have answers. Answers to everything except for that.”
Musk and Grimes first connected in 2018 over their mutual love of AI and art, sparking a relationship that’s been as unconventional as it is headline-making. The two have welcomed three kids—X Æ A-12, Exa Dark Sideræl (aka Y), and Techno Mechanicus—while navigating multiple breakups and reconciliations. Both have described their bond as complicated but deeply tied.
That candid exchange between Musk and Ye offers a glimpse into the raw, unfiltered vibe of In Whose Name?. Director Nico Ballesteros, who began shadowing West at just 18 years old, spent six years capturing more than 3,000 hours of footage.
The result is an intimate look not only at rare moments like Musk opening up, but also West himself—navigating his divorce from Kim Kardashian, his controversial public spirals, and his high-profile relationships with women like Chaney Jones, who famously echoed Kim’s style.
In Whose Name? premieres September 19.
