Gayle King is still glowing after her headline-making sitdown with Cardi B, admitting she walked away with a full-on “girl crush.”
Speaking to TMZ in New York City, King reflected on the viral interview where Cardi revealed her pregnancy. “She’s in a really good headspace and I’m happy for her,” King said. “I walked away with a girl crush on Cardi B.”
She went on to praise Cardi’s savvy and energy: “I think if you underestimate her, you do it at your own peril. She knows exactly what she’s doing. She’s very excited about the baby, and she says so is Stefon. She is ready for the new album, new music, and she wants us all to play — and I’m here for her. She’s a doll.”
Cardi revealed the news on CBS Mornings on Sept. 17, explaining why she held off on sharing it sooner. “I just was like, can I just say it on my own time? I’m not hiding. On my own terms. Let me close some deals first. You don’t really wanna say right away that you’re pregnant. Let me see a couple more sonograms, let my baby be healthy.”
She even admitted she hadn’t told her parents yet by the time the interview was filmed: “I have to tell them this week before this interview comes out.”
The rapper also opened up about her relationship with Stefon Diggs, saying he makes her feel “safe” and “confident.” Joking about the pregnancy, Cardi added, “Everybody kept telling us to have fun, and we had a little bit of too much fun, and now I’m here. We had too much fun. We’re very excited. We’re very happy.”
Her sophomore album Am I the Drama? dropped Sept. 19, following a teaser that promised a bolder, more defiant Cardi: “Seven years of love, life, and loss. Seven years I gave them grace, but now I give them hell. I learned power is not given, it’s taken. I’m shedding feathers and no more tears. I’m not back, I’m beyond. I’m not your villain, I’m your karma. The time is here, the time is now.”
