Consequence has stepped forward to clear the air on what really went down between Kanye West and Michael Che during that much-talked-about backstage clash at Saturday Night Live back in 2018.
The moment has resurfaced thanks to the release of the In Whose Name? documentary, which dives into pivotal moments from Ye’s career. One particular scene, where Che calls Kanye out for “selling out” the cast, has been blowing up online. Fans spotted Consequence in the clip trying to step in, but the details of the exchange were still murky—until now.
In a new video, Cons laid out his side of the story.
“We wrapped, and it was 1:30 in the morning, and I had my seven-year-old son outside at night,” he explained. “I was going to get my son when we had that conversation. I started to hear what’s going on, because my POV was that Kanye was in front of me, Michael Che was to the left of me, and Pete Davidson was to the right of me.”
“Once I caught on to the context, I realized this wasn’t just a conversation—it was a confrontation,” Consequence recalled. “Since we were in a business setting, I tapped the gentleman on the shoulder and told him, we should revisit this later.”
But according to Cons, what fans didn’t see was what happened next, once the cameras stopped rolling.
“And what you don’t see in the edit—and that’s why I don’t fuck with edits—is that he came back because he was at his job and he felt a way,” Consequence claimed. “So when he came back beefing, I told that n***a, ‘You either back the fuck up, or we can go outside.’ He chose to back the fuck up, and I gathered everybody together. I said, ‘We’re leaving,’ and we left.”
The tension between Che and Kanye stemmed from Ye’s infamous rant that night, where he voiced his support for Donald Trump and took shots at the SNL cast. In that same speech, he argued, “You can’t always have, every time you have a Black subject matter like [Bill] Cosby, that you have to have a Black comedian talking about him.”
Che, who had joked about Cosby on the show, wasn’t having it.
“I’m the Black comedian that made a joke about Cosby,” Che shot back. “That’s fucked up. Why’d you do that to me?”
Kanye’s response was simply: “I love you.”
