Mariah Carey is never shy about sharing her emotions — whether through her music or in candid conversation. As she prepares to release her new album Here for it All, the Grammy-winning icon is reflecting on the deeply personal moments that shaped the project.
In a sit-down with Gayle King on CBS Mornings that aired Wednesday, September 24, Carey opened up about losing both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, who passed away on August 24, 2024. While Carey has often been vocal about the challenges in her family relationships, she revealed that she and her mother had reconciled and were in a good place before Patricia’s death.
“I don’t know how I processed it,” Carey admitted. “I just know that it was extremely difficult for me to navigate and it was tough because I have always had an interesting relationship with my mother.”
She went on to share that she was by her mother’s side during her final hours, but hadn’t seen her sister in years before her passing. “I feel really badly about that as well, but that’s ‘cause I tend to have a guilt complex about everything, but it’s tough. My sister had an extremely hard life.”
When Gayle King asked if she was able to make peace with her mother, Carey replied, “I do, she said a couple of things to me that were very healing for what I needed and I felt that that was the right thing to do.”
Carey promises to channel that honesty into her upcoming album Here for it All, her 16th studio project, dropping Friday, Sept. 26.
