Bad Bunny was reportedly the subject of a “credible death threat” during his concert residency in Puerto Rico, according to TMZ.
Journalist Jay Fonseca revealed that an unidentified person posted threatening messages online claiming they wanted to kill the 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio.
Though no exact timeline for the alleged attack was mentioned, Fonseca said federal security was on hand at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot (“el Choli”) on Saturday (Sept. 20), when Bad Bunny wrapped up his No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí residency.
“There was a major alert for security,” Fonseca explained in Spanish around the 18-minute mark of his broadcast. “In other words, security was very zealous and stealthy for security at el Choli because there was a credible threat towards Bad Bunny. Later they realized the individual had serious issues, but apparently they were armed and everything.”
Fonseca added that authorities took further precautions, including tightening access to certain parts of the venue.
At this time, it’s not clear whether the suspect was taken into custody.
On the closing night of his residency, Bad Bunny filled the stage with star power. Marc Anthony joined him for a moving performance of “Preciosa,” a beloved anthem for Puerto Rico. From the B-stage, known as “La Casita,” the rapper also welcomed Ñengo Flow, who sported a jersey paying tribute to Hurricane María victims, along with reggaetón icons Jowell y Randy. Later, Arcángel and De La Ghetto lit up the arena with their joint hit “Acho PR.”
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny has faced threats beyond Puerto Rico. Mark Adams Prieto, an Arizona man indicted for plotting a mass shooting to ignite a “race war,” was believed to have set his sights on Bunny’s 2024 shows in Atlanta.
According to NBC News, the Department of Justice didn’t disclose the artist or venue in its statement, but the listed dates — May 14 and 15 — coincided with Bad Bunny’s Most Wanted Tour stops at the State Farm Arena.
