Fans can’t get enough of One Battle After Another, which stars Teyana Taylor, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Regina Hall. But for longtime Hall supporters, the film comes with a nostalgic surprise.
In the movie, Hall plays Deandra, a member of the revolutionary group French 75, alongside Junglepussy, portrayed by Shayna McHayle — who’s also known for her rap career under the same name. For those in the know, this marks a reunion: Hall and McHayle first shared the screen back in 2018’s indie gem Support the Girls.
In Support the Girls, Hall starred as Lisa, the dedicated manager of Double Whammies, a Hooters-style sports bar, while McHayle played Danyelle, a single mom working as a waitress there. Though the film never had a major studio release, it built a cult following and made history when Hall became the first African American to win the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.
Fans who caught the subtle Support the Girls reunion in One Battle After Another couldn’t contain their excitement online.
“No one is discussing how One Battle After Another is low key a Support the Girls (2018) reunion film,” one fan posted on X.
Another added, “Part of me wishes Haley Lu Richardson had played Alana Haim’s part in ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER so we could have had a full-blown SUPPORT THE GIRLS reunion.”
One fan even joked that they “bought a ticket for Support The Girls 2.”
Since its nationwide release on Friday, Sept. 25, One Battle After Another has been winning over critics and is on track to pull in $21 million during its opening weekend.
