Nicki Minaj Teases Documentary on Music Industry’s “Dark” Side, Calls Out Elon Musk

Nicki Minaj is hyping up her long-awaited documentary—and she’s hinting it won’t hold back.

On Thursday (Oct. 2), the rapper reacted to a fan’s post on X that read: “Nicki’s documentary is going to be groundbreaking. It’s going to reshape the music industry and wake millions of people up to what goes on in that dark business.”

Minaj co-signed the statement, fueling even more anticipation for the project.

Nicki Minaj stirred the pot even more when she quote-tweeted the fan’s post, writing: “That’s right. @elonmusk [saluting emoji].” It’s still unclear what, if any, connection Musk has to the project.

Her documentary was first announced back in 2020 as a six-part HBO Max series. By 2022, it had a title—Nicki—and was teased as arriving “soon,” though it never dropped.

In a December 2023 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Nicki explained that the delay was tied to her not finishing Pink Friday 2 in time for the rollout she had envisioned alongside the doc.

“I didn’t want the documentary to come out without the music. That would have made no sense to me,” Nicki explained.

She went on: “That network … they had to go with something else and I couldn’t force a documentary out either, so fine. Now we have someone—we have about two people that are really interested, and I think it’s going to be a nicer or easier experience to bridge the documentary now with the music. But I will tell you guys more about it soon. But the documentary is absolutely still coming.”

Nicki also teased just how personal the project will be, promising fans a rawer side of her than they’ve ever seen.

“After you guys have digested the music, the documentary will be a different level of emotional roller coaster,” she said. “I’m sharing stuff that probably nobody would expect me to share really in the documentary. I mean, it’s going to be a great experience for my fans. So because the tour starts in March [2024] … I would want the documentary out prior to March, I’ll say that.”

Right after teasing her documentary, Nicki Minaj stirred things up again—this time with Jay-Z.

She posted an AI-generated image of Hov sporting dreadlocks and balding at the crown, captioning it: “Remember when jay z said he left condoms in a child’s car seat?”

The line is a throwback to Jay-Z’s infamous 2001 diss track “Super Ugly (I Got Myself A Gun),” where he took aim at Nas during their heated feud. On the track, Jay rapped:

“I came in your Bentley backseat (Damn) / Skeeted in your Jeep (Woo) / Left condoms on your baby-seat (Woo) / Yeah, n**a, the gloves is off, the love is done.”*

In another fiery post, Nicki Minaj took direct aim at Roc Nation’s CEO, tweeting: “Desiree Perez your time is up.”

She’s called out Perez before—more on Nicki’s past comments about her can be found [here].
