Things have taken a dramatic turn in the brewing feud between singer Lola Young and producer Carter Lang.
On Friday (Oct. 3), the BBC reported that Young filed an intellectual property lawsuit after Lang claimed writing credits on four of her songs. The case was officially submitted in London on Wednesday on behalf of Young and Sony Music Publishing.
“It is with immense disappointment,” read a statement from Young’s lawyers, “especially given recent events, that we have had no choice but to respond to recent writing credit claims from Carter Lang on four Lola Young songs by issuing legal proceedings on her behalf. Carter’s claims are strongly refuted and we will not allow Lola’s reputation and integrity to be called into question — particularly so long after the sessions took place and agreements were put in place. Lola has always been authentic in her songwriting process and acknowledges songwriting contributions where appropriate. This dispute has been ongoing for several months and we look forward to the truth being established.”
As of now, Lang — known for his work with SZA, Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Omar Apollo — has not publicly responded.
The legal filing comes just weeks after Young collapsed on stage at the All Things Go Festival, prompting her to cancel all upcoming shows “for the foreseeable future.”
Young’s career has been steadily building since 2019, but she reached viral fame last year with her breakout hit “Messy.”
It remains unclear which songs Lang is claiming credit for, though he is listed as a producer on “Messy” and several other Young tracks.
Last month, Young dropped her third studio album, I’m Only F**king Myself.
