Taylor Swift’s The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, the companion event to her latest album, dominated the box office this weekend.
According to Box Office Mojo, the theatrical experience — which isn’t a traditional film but instead features a music video and behind-the-scenes footage — pulled in an estimated $33 million during its opening weekend.
That total was enough to outshine Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which earned about $11.1 million in its second week. The critically acclaimed film has now grossed just under $43 million domestically and crossed the $100 million mark worldwide, solidifying its status as a major Best Picture contender.
Also debuting this weekend was Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, featuring Dwayne Johnson in a career-defining turn as UFC legend Mark Kerr. Despite opening on roughly 350 fewer screens than Swift’s event, the A24 drama managed an impressive $6 million launch.
Meanwhile, Showgirl’s global total has climbed to around $46 million.
Both One Battle After Another and The Smashing Machine are expected to get a boost as awards season heats up. For Anderson, OBAA has already become the highest-grossing film of his career, surpassing 2007’s Oscar-winning There Will Be Blood.
In short — if you haven’t yet, go check out One Battle After Another and The Smashing Machine at your local theater.
