DaBaby might have stirred controversy with the emotional video for his latest track “Save Me,” but it’s also led to new opportunities in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden took to social media to share a photo of himself and the rapper, revealing they met to talk about “important issues and collaborations.”
Last month, DaBaby faced backlash after dropping the “Save Me” video, which depicts him rescuing a woman inspired by the real-life murder of Iryna Zarutska by 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr. The rapper also promoted the victim’s family’s GoFundMe page, which has since raised over $470,000.
Though DaBaby never knew Zarutska personally, the story hit home because the tragedy happened in his native Charlotte. However, the video sparked criticism for being filmed on the city’s light rail system without permission, with some accusing the rapper of exploiting the event—while others praised him for bringing attention to it.
