Actress Diane Keaton, Beloved Star of The Godfather and Annie Hall, Dead at 79

Academy Award–winning actress Diane Keaton has passed away at the age of 79.

People reports that the Annie Hall and The Godfather star died in California.

Born on January 5, 1946, Keaton made her film debut in the 1970 romantic comedy Lovers and Other Strangers before landing her breakout role as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather two years later. Her 1970s run solidified her place in Hollywood history, especially after starring alongside Woody Allen in 1977’s Annie Hall, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress the following year.

In a 2023 interview with AARP, Keaton reflected on her journey and credited her late mother, Dorothy Keaton, as her greatest inspiration. “When I was a young girl, about 6, I watched my mother get crowned Mrs. Highland Park,” she recalled. “I remember going, ‘Oh my God, I want that too. I want to go up there on the stage where it’s all lit up.’”

Her success in the ’70s paved the way for more iconic roles in beloved films such as Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, The Family Stone, and Because I Said So. Her final on-screen appearance was in the 2024 comedy Summer Camp.

Beyond acting, Keaton was also an accomplished author, penning three books, including her 2011 New York Times bestselling memoir Then Again.

Keaton, who never married, is survived by her two adopted children, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25.
