Rapper Lil Woody claims he spotted Derrick Groves, the escaped inmate from Orleans Parish Prison, partying at an Atlanta nightclub just days before his capture.
Groves, who broke out of the Louisiana facility in May alongside nine other men, managed to evade authorities for five months before being found hiding in a crawl space beneath a home in Atlanta. He was taken into custody on Wednesday (October 8) after a tense standoff — the last of the escapees to be captured.
On Friday (October 10), Lil Woody took to Instagram Stories to share that he believed he saw Groves out in public prior to the arrest. “And y’all know I play… I was like, ‘Aye, there go that n***a that escaped from New Orleans prison right there,’” Woody said, recalling the moment he and a friend noticed the man inside the club.
Though his friend dismissed the idea, Woody said he was convinced it was really Groves. He also joked about the irony of the situation, saying, “Then they had a $50,000 reward out for this n***a? He ain’t even on a mission — he in the club.”
The manhunt came to an end this week when Derrick Groves was escorted out of the Atlanta home where he had been hiding. Police reportedly deployed gas into the residence multiple times before Groves finally surrendered. As he was taken into custody, he turned to a Fox 5 Atlanta camera and boldly blew a kiss before being led away.
During his extradition hearing at Fulton County Jail, Groves asked to be sent back to Louisiana. He had been serving time and awaiting sentencing at Orleans Parish Prison after being accused of killing two men during a 2018 Mardi Gras Day celebration in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward.
