Judge Blocks Wendy Williams’ Ex-Husband’s Bid to Gain Control of Her Guardianship

A judge has dismissed the lawsuit filed by Wendy Williams’ ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, over her guardianship.

During a hearing on Thursday (October 9), Judge Margaret M. Garnett rejected Hunter’s motion to move forward with the case, which sought to remove Sabrina Morrissey as Williams’ guardian. The court clarified that Hunter has no legal authority to file lawsuits or act on Williams’ behalf.

Although the judge allowed Hunter the option to refile, it must be done in his own name — meaning he can only represent himself, not Williams.

In June, Hunter had filed a $250 million federal lawsuit accusing Morrissey of exploiting the former talk show host. He claimed he wanted to serve as Williams’ “next friend,” a legal term for someone who acts in the best interest of another person unable to represent themselves.

However, after news of the lawsuit surfaced, Williams, who revealed her dementia diagnosis in August, stated she was completely unaware that Hunter had filed any legal action in her name.

“Nor do I want him involved in my life like that, no,” she said firmly. “I’m divorced forever.”

“He’s a money-grubber; he’s always been that way,” Williams went on. “It’s no surprise to see him doing such awful things — again.”

In August, Williams’ attorney, Joe Tacopina, shed light on her court-ordered guardianship, which was established due to her ongoing mental and physical health challenges.

“It’s incredibly unfair and downright despicable,” Tacopina stated. “She’s told me multiple times, ‘Joe, I wish I wasn’t in this situation… but if someone has to be, I’m glad it’s me, because I have a platform to expose the system.’”

Tacopina also revealed that Williams has no plans to return to television. Instead, she hopes to embark on a speaking tour to share her story and shed light on her experience.

Earlier this month, Williams offered an update on her time at the luxury dementia care facility where she’s been staying since her diagnosis. Speaking with The Cut, she described the New York City facility as a “dump” — echoing her January comments when she called it a “prison.”

“Did you see the people?” she asked. “The elderly people? Why would I want to look at that?”
