Cardi B isn’t letting the “flop” talk faze her.
The rapper’s sophomore album, Am I the Drama?, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last month, moving 200,000 units in its first week. Despite that success, critics accused her of boosting sales through a $4.99 promo price and by including older hits like “WAP” and “Up” toward its platinum certification.
In a new Paper Magazine interview published Tuesday (October 14), Cardi fired back at the hate, saying she’s “very proud” of her numbers. “First of all, I’m very proud of my number. Very proud of my number. We’re in a very different era when it comes to music,” she said. “So not only am I proud of my numbers, but you got bitches from the sideline that are going to try to make you not feel proud of your numbers.”
“There’s people that have never even seen 100,000 sales calling me a flop,” Cardi B said. “So people will try to discourage you about your numbers, but clearly, they don’t discourage me. That’s what people will try to do, but it fails.”
The “Safe” rapper went on to say that the hate “fails” when thousands of fans post videos and memes using her songs — and even some critics are changing their minds. “There’s so many people that was doubting my album that is like, ‘You know what, her album is good,’” she added.
Cardi’s Am I the Drama? soared up the charts thanks to a bold promo push, from comic-style videos to meet and greets at record stores across the country — all while she’s pregnant with her fourth child.
