Gucci Mane Reflects on Apologizing to Drake: ‘I Was Dealing With an Episode’

During an appearance on Revolt’s Big Facts podcast, Gucci Mane opened up about his past behavior, his decision to apologize to Drake, and how he accepted an apology from Young Thug.

Back in 2013, Gucci went on a social media rampage, calling out a large portion of the hip-hop community, including several of his own collaborators. Shortly after the outburst, he was sentenced to prison and didn’t regain his freedom until 2016. By the time he returned, he says he was a changed man.

Around the 46-minute mark of the interview, Gucci revealed that after his release, he made an effort to personally reach out to many of the people he had disrespected during that chaotic period.

“A lot of those people, I reached out to and said, ‘Hey, I’m sorry, I was going through something,’” Gucci shared. “They were like, ‘I forgive you, Gucci.’ Like, I said some wild stuff about Drake, even texted him some crazy messages. But I was in a bad place, so I had to reach back out and say, ‘My bad, I was going through something.’ And he told me, ‘Man, we’ll get past that. Brothers go through things.’”

He admitted it felt “so good” to be met with understanding during what he described as a dark time when he was heavily using drugs and behaving recklessly.

“Some people didn’t want to hear it—what I said was too offensive, so they just don’t rock with me anymore,” he continued. “But a lot of people were like, ‘Man, we’ll move past that. It’s not that deep.’ I’m really thankful for that, for people not holding on to the past.”

Gucci, who admitted he can be stubborn and slow to forgive, shared how he recently decided to let go of a grudge. “For instance, [Young] Thug said some things about me,” he explained, referencing leaked jail calls where Thug allegedly said Gucci had gone “soft” after turning his life around. “He dropped a song, ‘I Miss My Dogs…’ and I instantly accepted his apology, because I’ve been in that same spot. I know what it feels like to just want someone to say, ‘It’s okay.’”

Though Gucci said he hasn’t spoken directly to Young Thug yet, he made it clear there’s no animosity. “I forgive him,” he stated.

On Friday, Gucci dropped his latest project Episodes, a double-disc album that includes “You Don’t Love Me” featuring Sexyy Red. The record shares its title with his newly released book, which came out earlier this week.
