In an Instagram post shared on Sunday (Oct. 19), Britney Spears claimed she suffered “brain damage” at some point in her life.
The pop icon began the post by praising the 2014 Disney film Maleficent, calling it “incredible,” and describing the story of how the lead character has her wings taken from her.
“Not that this has any relevance with me but I do find it incredibly interesting,” she wrote. “I had a traumatic experience as some of you know at the end of my book where for 4 months I no longer had my private door and illegally was forced to not use my feet or body to go anywhere.”
Spears was referring to her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, in which she opened up about her time under her father Jamie Spears’ conservatorship, her relationships, and her struggles with postpartum depression.
“Trust me there’s [a lot] I didn’t share in my book and still things at this very moment I’ve kept hidden because it’s incredibly painful and sad,” she continued. “I do feel the logic and mindfulness in my body as ONE was 100 percent murdered and destroyed I couldn’t dance or move for 5 months. … I do feel like my wings were taken away and brain damage happened to me a long time ago 100 percent… I have of course moved on from that troubling time in my life and I’m blessed to be alive.”

At the end of her post, Britney reflected on possibly visiting the Vatican.
“It’s fun to tell stories at this point because this all might sound so silly but with what garbage literally is being said about me I said why not bring SUBSTANCE to the table,” she wrote.
In 2019, Spears was hospitalized and reportedly left with permanent nerve damage. More recently, People reported that her ex-husband Kevin Federline alleged in his memoir You Thought You Knew that she drank alcohol while pregnant and used cocaine before attempting to breastfeed their children.
In her own 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears denied ever having a drinking problem or any interest in hard drugs, though she did admit to occasionally taking Adderall.
