Shakira Says It’s ‘Long Overdue’ for Bad Bunny to Headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show: ‘I’m So Proud’

Shakira says there couldn’t be a better time for Bad Bunny to take the stage at the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show.

In a chat with Variety, the Colombian superstar—who co-headlined the 2020 halftime show with Jennifer Lopez—was asked about the Puerto Rican rapper’s upcoming performance.

“It’s about time!” Shakira told Thania Garcia about the three-time Grammy winner. “I remember when we did ours, even having part of our set in Spanish felt like a bold move. The acceptance of Spanish-language music as part of the mainstream has come such a long way since I first started.”

She added that she hopes English-speaking audiences’ early “resistance” and “puzzlement” toward her music helped pave the way for other Latin artists.

“I’m so proud that Bad Bunny, who embodies not just Latin culture but also the global power of Spanish-language music, is getting to perform on the biggest stage in the world,” Shakira continued. “It’s the perfect time for a show like this. I can’t wait to see it.”

Bad Bunny isn’t new to the Super Bowl stage. Back in 2020, he made a surprise appearance during the halftime show, performing part of his verse from Cardi B’s “I Like It” and later blending his hit “Callaíta” with Shakira’s “Chantaje.”

Despite some backlash from critics and reported ICE threats to be present at this year’s event, many stars — including Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Whoopi Goldberg, and Shaboozey — have shown their support for the Debí Tirar Más Fotos rapper.

Bad Bunny is set to headline the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show on February 8, 2025, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
