Ernie Hudson has been rocking the proton pack for decades, and it doesn’t seem like he’s stopping anytime soon.
In a new chat with Stage Left Unsaid, the original Ghostbusters legend shared a rare update on the highly anticipated animated series currently being developed by Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation.
While promoting his BET drama The Family Business, Ernie Hudson was asked what’s next for the Ghostbusters franchise—and his answer pointed straight to the long-rumored Netflix animated project.
“Well, you know, I never know. I find out a lot of what I know from the fans more than from the studio,” Hudson said. “I know they’re talking about something else, but we’re also in the middle of doing an animated series, and you know, I’m Winston Zeddemore, and I own the Ghostbusters franchise. So, there’ll be more, and I’m excited about it.”
Although he didn’t drop details like casting or a release date, Hudson’s comments hint that he’s deeply involved in the series’ development. That lines up with his previous stance about continuing to voice Winston Zeddemore—a role he’s fiercely protective of after being excluded from the original ’80s cartoon The Real Ghostbusters.
In a 2024 chat with ComingSoon.net, Hudson was clear about his intentions: “I told Jason (Reitman), ‘Don’t ever let anybody do Winston’s voice unless I’m gone. Like, gone for real… I love doing voice-over work, and I’d be very heartbroken if anyone voiced Winston from this point moving forward.’”
Fans will remember that although Hudson portrayed Winston in the live-action films, Arsenio Hall voiced the character for the first three seasons of The Real Ghostbusters, with Buster Jones taking over until the series wrapped in 1991. Hudson has since spoken openly about his disappointment, revealing that he even auditioned for the role back then but wasn’t selected.
