Tyler Perry Gifts $100K to Bishop Marvin Winans’ Church After Viral Video

Tyler Perry is once again backing up his faith with action.

As reported by Rolling Out, the filmmaker and philanthropist recently donated $100,000 to Bishop Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church in Detroit. The generous contribution came shortly after a fundraising video from the church went viral and sparked widespread discussion online.

The controversy began during Perfecting Church’s annual “Day of Giving” on October 19. Bishop Marvin Winans, who has led the Detroit congregation since founding it in 1989, encouraged members to donate what he called “$1,000 plus one.”

That phrase sparked confusion among attendees—some interpreted it as $1,001, while others thought he meant two separate $1,000 donations. Amid the uncertainty, longtime member Roberta McCoy stepped forward with $1,235, saying she was giving “in faith” toward the church’s mission.

Rather than simply accepting her contribution, Winans corrected her publicly. “That’s only $1,200,” he said, pressing for clarity. McCoy responded that she’d try to bring the remaining $800 later, but Winans replied, “Well, that ain’t what I asked you to do.” The moment quickly went viral, with many criticizing the pastor for seemingly embarrassing a church member over her offering.

In the days that followed, both Winans and McCoy spoke out to clear the air. McCoy stated, “He absolutely did not rebuke me. There was a correction, because pastor gave instruction on the lines to get into.” Winans also clarified that he was calling donors “by increments” to keep the service organized, adding that he later apologized to McCoy personally.

Despite their explanations, the viral clip reignited debates online about church fundraising practices and transparency.

That’s when Tyler Perry stepped in. Known for his consistent generosity toward churches, schools, and disaster relief causes, the entertainment mogul donated $100,000 to Perfecting Church. Perry, who often credits his Christian faith as the heart of his philanthropy, made the contribution as the ministry continues work on its long-delayed new building on 7 Mile and Woodward—an ambitious project in progress since 2002.

The gesture has been met with widespread praise, with many commending Perry for supporting Winans and his congregation through a challenging moment.
