Acting icons Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly making their return to The Mummy franchise for a fourth installment.
As reported by Variety, both stars have signed on for the upcoming film, which will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence Productions—the duo best known for their work on the 2019 horror hit Ready or Not and the 2022 Scream reboot.
Fraser famously starred as adventurer Rick O’Connell in the 1999 remake of The Mummy—a reboot of the original film series that ran from 1932 to 1955—while Rachel Weisz portrayed British Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan.
The Stephen Sommers-directed blockbuster was a massive success, earning $416.4 million worldwide and spawning three follow-ups released in 2001, 2008, and 2017. The upcoming fourth installment is slated to hit theaters next April.
Tom Cruise later took the lead in the 2017 Dark Universe reboot of The Mummy, directed by Alex Kurtzman, which failed to connect with audiences and did not feature any of the original 1999 cast. Fraser reprised his role in two sequels—2001’s The Mummy Returns and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor—while Weisz only returned for The Mummy Returns.
In a 2022 interview with Variety, Fraser revealed he was open to returning to The Mummy franchise but hinted that the most recent film missed the mark because it lacked a sense of humor.
“It is hard to make that movie,” the Oscar winner said. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride—but not terrifying and scary.”
