SZA has addressed rumors that she was somehow caught in the middle of the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
“It was something between two grown-ass men, so why would I insert myself between something between two grown-ass men, you know?” SZA told GQ’s Frazier Tharpe in a new interview. “And I feel like that’s how everybody felt—with the exception of people who didn’t feel that way.”
She went on to clarify that while she has love for both artists, she had no reason to pick sides. “I didn’t really have any stake, per se. Obviously, I love Kendrick. I’m signed to TDE. That’s my family. Obviously, I’ve known Drake for so long and we have a beautiful rapport. And, obviously, it’s always unfortunate when the unfortunate occurs.”
Earlier this year, SZA co-headlined Kendrick’s Grand National Tour across North America and Europe, where she surprised fans by performing her Drake collaboration “Rich Baby Daddy,” featuring Sexyy Red — who famously chants, “Shake that ass for Drake / Now shake that ass for me.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” she said with a laugh. “‘Poetic Justice’ was in the set list,” she added, referencing Kendrick’s 2012 collab with Drake. “So why wouldn’t I keep ‘Rich Baby Daddy’? I don’t know why I wouldn’t be celebrating some shit that I ate up.”
Her comments come just weeks after Drake announced he’s appealing the dismissal of his lawsuit against Universal Music Group over Kendrick’s hit “Not Like Us,” which a judge previously ruled used “figurative and hyperbolic language.”
