A new teaser from the ReLiving Single podcast is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the show’s most iconic characters became part of the cast.
Hosted by original stars Kim Coles and Erika Alexander, the podcast is set to drop its full episode featuring Queen Latifah on Wednesday, November 12. In the preview clip released Tuesday, November 11, Latifah reflects on the moment Alexander joined Living Single—and how effortlessly she blended in with the rest of the cast.
Erika Alexander, who famously played attorney Maxine Shaw, joked that her casting on Living Single felt almost by chance. “I did an audition. You just found me off the street, like an urchin,” she teased. Queen Latifah playfully replied, calling her a “professional maverick, kingdom, queendom urchin,” before setting the record straight about how deliberate the casting actually was.
According to Latifah, Alexander’s addition to the show was a defining moment for the production. “To get you was like, ‘what?!’” she said, noting that Alexander didn’t just join the cast—she elevated it. Alexander responded with gratitude, admitting that she sometimes struggled to understand why she was surrounded by such effortlessly cool performers.
Latifah quickly assured her, “You don’t give yourself the proper credit. First of all… your influence is strong, girl.”
The heartfelt back-and-forth showed the lasting respect between the two women. Alexander chimed in, “Your influence is strong. We still go around acting like we own everything,” referring to how the show’s self-assured spirit carried into their real lives.
Latifah’s response was simple but powerful: “And you should.”
Living Single aired on Fox from 1993 to 1998, following six friends sharing life in a Brooklyn brownstone. The series became a cultural staple for its portrayal of young Black professionals navigating love, careers, and identity.
Latifah starred as Khadijah James, the driven founder of Flavor magazine, while Alexander’s Maxine Shaw, Esq., stood out for her sharp wit, legal brilliance, and emotional depth.
Decades later, the cast’s impact still resonates, with Living Single credited as a blueprint for many sitcoms that followed. The full ReLiving Single episode featuring Queen Latifah drops on November 12, available on all podcast platforms.
