Here’s Your First Look at Dwayne Johnson as Maui in Disney’s Live-Action “Moana”

Disney has finally given fans their first real peek at the live-action Moana remake, dropping a teaser that highlights Catherine Laga’aia as Motunui’s future chieftess—and shows Dwayne Johnson embodying Maui in person for the very first time.

The teaser, released on Monday, November 17, offers the first full look at Laga’aia stepping into a role that’s become one of Disney’s most iconic over the last decade, according to Deadline.

The teaser also confirms Johnson’s full on-screen transformation into the demigod he originally voiced in the 2016 animated classic and its 2024 sequel.

Johnson shared the clip on Instagram, previously revealing how demanding it is to bring Maui’s look to life—explaining that the suit takes “a couple of hours every day” to put on.

The live-action remake reunites key figures from the original films. Auli‘i Cravalho—who voiced Moana in both animated features—returns as part of the executive producing team. Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose work helped shape the unforgettable soundtrack of the first movie, also joins as a producer. Thomas Kail, known for directing the Hamilton stage production, takes the helm as director.

The main cast is rounded out by John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala—portraying Moana’s protective father, her warm yet strong-willed mother, and the beloved grandmother who nurtures her bond with the ocean.

Fans got an early glimpse of Johnson’s transformation last year when photos from the Hawaiʻi set leaked, revealing him bulked up for the role and covered in Maui’s iconic tattoos.

The teaser also offers a quick look at the early chapters of Moana’s story—her pull toward the ocean and the first steps of the voyage that sends her beyond the edges of her island.

Disney confirms the film will stay true to the core storyline: Moana’s first big journey, her unpredictable partnership with Maui, and their mission to restore balance to her home.

As Disney keeps rolling out live-action versions of its animated classics—including recent takes on Snow White and Lilo & Stitch—Moana is shaping up to be one of its most anticipated titles yet. The film hits theaters on July 10, 2026.
