Dwayne Johnson may be fully immersed in a gritty MMA role, but behind the scenes he’s been aiming for something a little more haute couture.
While filming The Smashing Machine with Emily Blunt, Johnson admitted he pitched himself for a role in the upcoming sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2. On Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast, he shared that he floated the idea straight to Blunt between takes.
“I pitched myself. I told her while she was shooting,” he said, as Blunt chimed in with a laugh, “He tried.”
Blunt joked that if Johnson were to join the cast, he’d naturally play someone “who knows fashion” and “is cool,” adding that he’d have to be “great at walking in heels.” Johnson shot back with a perfectly timed line: “Size 15 heels.”
Their playful banter arrives as excitement grows for the follow-up to the beloved 2006 fashion classic starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Blunt. The long-awaited sequel, arriving May 1, 2026, reunites much of the original cast, including Stanley Tucci, Tracie Thoms, and Tibor Feldman, with David Frankel back behind the camera.
The sequel also introduces a star-packed lineup of newcomers like Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, and Simone Ashley, with Lady Gaga recently confirmed for a small role.
Though plot details remain locked down, Blunt praised the script from returning screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna — but refused to reveal anything about the storyline or where her character Emily Charlton stands now.
Johnson, however, opened up about the chaos surrounding production, sharing that Blunt had sent him videos of massive crowds gathering around the New York City set, telling him, “It was wild. Like, pop star level sighting.”
