A student who survived the Brown University shooting that claimed two lives and injured nine others has revealed that she also lived through the 2018 Parkland, Florida, school shooting that killed 17 people.
Zoe Weissman, 20, opened up to MS NOW about the haunting and heartbreaking experience of enduring two mass shootings.
“I’m really angry. I’m really angry that this is happening to me all over again. And I’m just in shock,” Weissman said. “I think, mentally, I feel like I’m 12 again. This feels exactly how I felt in 2018.”
Weissman noted that her experience, sadly, isn’t isolated, pointing out that more students across the country have survived multiple shootings.
“There’s already students who survived the school shooting in Oxford in Michigan, and then went to Michigan State and survived another school shooting,” she said.
“This isn’t a new phenomenon, and we’re going to get to a point where there’s [more] people like myself who survived two of these,” she added.
The shooting occurred on Saturday (Dec. 13) in Brown University’s Barus & Holley building, home to engineering and physics classes. Many students were either studying for exams or leaving campus for winter break when the violence erupted.
A person of interest was taken into custody around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday at a Coventry, Rhode Island, hotel, according to law enforcement sources.
At the time of the arrest, the individual was reportedly carrying two guns.
“We have detained a person of interest,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said during a Sunday morning press conference. “We are lifting the shelter-in-place.”
Rhode Island authorities later confirmed they are not seeking any additional suspects in the shooting. A tip from the public reportedly led police to the location where the person was found.
In response to the tragedy, Brown University announced it was canceling the rest of its fall semester classes.
