Wale opened up about his past relationship with Solange Knowles, finally addressing long-standing rumors during a recent appearance on Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe.
While reflecting on his early career and creative journey, the Washington, D.C. rapper spoke directly about speculation that he and Solange were romantically involved. According to Wale, their bond was based on friendship, shared respect, and artistic encouragement—not romance.
“No, we was real good friends,” Wale said. He went on to commend Solange’s taste and intuition, noting that she was one of the first major celebrity figures to genuinely support his music when he was still largely underground. He recalled performing together at the MTV Video Music Awards, where his band acted as the house band, an experience that helped deepen their connection.
Wale also credited Solange with introducing him to worlds beyond music, including fashion and broader culture. He said she put him on to brands like Givenchy and fragrances such as Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb—references that later appeared in his lyrics on “Lotus Flower Bomb.”
He clarified that those mentions weren’t tied to a romantic muse, but instead reflected that specific chapter of his life and personal growth.
Wale had nothing but praise for Solange’s vision, adding that she saw his potential well before mainstream recognition followed. “If anybody knows Solo, they know that she’s always ahead,” he said, explaining that she recognized something in him long before others caught on.
