Former Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide star Devon Werkheiser has spoken out after a video of his former co-star Tylor Chase, who is currently unhoused in Riverside, California, went viral.
In a conversation with TMZ, Werkheiser described the situation as deeply upsetting, calling it “heartbreaking.”
“Tylor was a sensitive, sweet, and kind kid. It is heartbreaking to see him this way,” Werkheiser said.
He went on to explain that Chase’s reported struggles with addiction and mental health make the situation especially difficult to navigate.
“I haven’t seen Tylor in almost 20 years since the show ended,” the actor and musician shared. “Anyone who has dealt with severe addiction and deep mental health issues knows it’s an unbelievably challenging situation if they don’t want help.”
Werkheiser also noted that simply giving Chase money wouldn’t fix the larger issue.
“It’s an everyday uphill battle to course correct. It requires a ton of support and patience and time,” he said.
“My only hope is that from this exposure, someone with real understanding and resources can step in, get Tylor into treatment, and help him get back on track,” Werkheiser added. “We all want a happy ending.”
Chase’s current circumstances came to public attention after a video surfaced showing someone speaking with the former Nickelodeon actor on the streets of Riverside, where he is reportedly living.
According to the Riverside Police Department, officers encounter Chase at least once a week to offer treatment options, which he has repeatedly turned down.
Mighty Ducks actor Shaun Weiss has also shared that he offered Chase a bed at a recovery facility in San Clemente, California.
