On Tuesday, January 20, Meghan Trainor took to Instagram to share a big — and totally unexpected — family update. The singer announced that she and her husband, Daryl Sabara, had welcomed their third child with the help of a surrogate. She shared an emotional photo of herself holding her newborn daughter, with Sabara smiling proudly beside her.
The couple’s baby girl, Mikey Moon Trainor, was born on January 28.
“Our baby girl Mikey Moon Trainor, has finally made it to the world thanks to our incredible, superwoman surrogate. We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses, teams who made this dream possible,” Trainor wrote in the caption.
“We had endless conversations with our doctors throughout this journey, and this was the safest way for us to keep growing our family. We are completely over the moon in love with this sweet girl,” she added.
Now, in a new interview, Trainor is opening up more about why she and Sabara decided to go the surrogacy route.
“It wasn’t our first choice, but we had endless conversations with our doctors on this journey, and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family,” Trainor explained. “We are forever grateful for that option.”
Trainor and Sabara also share two other children, both of whom she carried herself — 4-year-old Riley and 2-year-old Barry. According to Trainor, Riley and Barry even helped pick their baby sister’s middle name.
While surrogacy isn’t for everyone, Trainor wants to normalize the choice, calling it “just another beautiful way to build a family.” She also stressed that it’s “not something to whisper about or judge,” adding that it’s “rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork.”
