ASAP Rocky’s impression of Drake explaining why he wouldn’t perform “Work” sounds eerily accurate.
While speaking with DJ Akademiks, Rocky opened up about his issues with Drake and what pushed him to fire off a diss. According to Rocky, he finally spoke out after the “God’s Plan” rapper made it clear he didn’t want to perform “Work,” his hit collaboration with Rihanna.
“The only reason I said something was because I felt like he took a shot at my girl,” Rocky explained.
“He was like, ‘I don’t want to perform this song,’” Rocky said around the 1-hour, 29-minute mark of the interview, mimicking Drake’s tone. “‘I don’t sing this song anymore. You can sing it though.’”
Elsewhere in the interview, Rocky said he still believed Drake was his friend as recently as 2020, when Drizzy allegedly showed support by gifting him a chain for Yams Day in honor of ASAP Yams.
Rocky also admitted he regrets taking shots at Drake on Metro Boomin and Future’s “Show of Hands,” where he rapped, “N***as in they feelings over women. What, you hurt or somethin’? I smash before you birthed, son, Flacko hit it first, son. Still don’t trust you, it’s always us, never them.”
According to Rocky, many fans took the line as a reference to rumors that he had been involved with Sophie Brussaux, the mother of Drake’s child, before Drake.
“I said what I said, and I shouldn’t of, because it was petty,” Rocky admitted. “And I was being messy by putting another woman … saying something about another woman. That’s corny.”
He added that while he wanted to get his message across, he later felt the lyrics may have crossed a line.
“What I did, like, you feel me? I thought about it … I probably could have left that out, you know what I’m saying? But I just needed n****s to know,” he said.
Rocky also made it clear that he no longer has direct communication with Drake.
