The Charlie’s Angels franchise is reportedly gearing up for another comeback, with a fourth film now in development.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Pete Chiarelli — known for Crazy Rich Asians and The Proposal — has been tapped to write the new installment. So far, the project doesn’t have a scheduled theatrical release date.
Flower Films, the production company founded by Drew Barrymore, is co-producing the movie. Barrymore famously starred in the early 2000s Charlie’s Angels reboot.
The franchise traces back to the original female-led action series that aired from 1976 to 1981, starring the late Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson. It later returned to the big screen in 2000 with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Barrymore leading the charge. That film was followed by Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003.
After a short-lived seven-episode Charlie’s Angels TV reboot in 2011, the franchise returned to theaters in 2019 with Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott in the lead roles, under the direction of Elizabeth Banks. However, the film struggled at the box office, pulling in just over $73 million worldwide and earning mixed-to-tepid reviews.
At the time, Banks addressed the film’s underperformance, suggesting that sexism played a role in its reception. “You’ve had 37 Spider-Man movies and you’re not complaining,” she said. “I think women are allowed to have one or two action franchises every 17 years — I feel totally fine with that.”
In another interview, she also acknowledged the financial stakes tied to the movie’s success.
“Look, people have to buy tickets to this movie, too. This movie has to make money,” she explained. “If this movie doesn’t make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men don’t go see women do action movies.”
