French Montana Reveals “Splash Brothers” Was Originally “Stay Schemin’ Pt. 2”

French Montana is finally addressing the long-running rumors about the unreleased “Splash Brothers” track with Drake and Rick Ross — and he says it was actually intended to be a follow-up to their iconic “Stay Schemin’.”

During a sit-down on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, French detailed how the collaboration came together and why the full version featuring all three artists was never officially released.

“There’s a leaked version [with Drake],” French said. “The ‘Splash Brothers’ record never came out with Drake because the version that we had… had a verse from Rozay. I think Drake was waiting for [a different] verse from Rozay for that record. I think he wanted him to cut another verse. Either he said something on the first verse or something had happened.”

He then confirmed the original vision behind the song.

“It was supposed to be a ‘Stay Schemin’ part two,” French explained, nodding to the trio’s 2012 anthem that helped define the early 2010s rap scene.

French also revealed that “Splash Brothers” actually started out as Drake’s record.

“Drake sent me ‘Splash Brothers’ for his album. It was Drake’s song, and he sent it to me,” he said. According to French, Drake asked him to lay down several hook options before choosing the one he liked best. Once Drake locked in his verse, the next step was for Rick Ross to add his contribution — but things ultimately didn’t come together as planned.

When the trio eventually linked up in the Bahamas, Ross had already laid down a verse, but delays ended up derailing the rollout. French hinted that because Ross didn’t submit a revised verse in time, the direction of the record changed.

“Since Ross didn’t do the verse on time, he was like, ‘You want the record?’ I was like, ‘I’ll take it.’ So it was never something like it was mine,” French explained.

The discussion also shifted to the widely publicized friction between Drake and Ross that escalated in 2024. Asked if he believes the two could patch things up, French remained hopeful.

“It’ll happen,” he said. “Brothers always fight and make up, man. It’ll happen. Nobody got shot, nobody died, you know?”

French also made it clear that there’s no strain between him and Drake, even teasing the possibility of a future collaboration between the OVO hitmaker and his longtime associate Max B.
