The Pussycat Dolls have finally cleared up a long-standing pop rumor involving Britney Spears, confirming that she was initially set to appear in their 2008 “When I Grow Up” music video.
The reveal came during a recent appearance on Page Six radio, putting an end to years of speculation about a rumored cameo that never made it into one of their biggest hits.
According to Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, and Kimberly Wyatt, Britney Spears wasn’t just considered for the video—she may have actually filmed her part.
Wyatt revealed that the now-famous scene where the group turns and waves from a car in traffic was originally meant to feature Spears. “When we turn and we wave it was going to be Britney we were waving to,” she said, noting that the scene was later changed before the video was released.
The scrapped cameo dates back to a major moment for both acts. The “When I Grow Up” video dropped while the Pussycat Dolls were promoting Doll Domination and hitting the road as the opening act on Britney Spears’ 2008 Circus tour.
Wyatt made it clear the decision to cut Spears wasn’t theirs. “I think at one point she did film it, but for whatever reason it just didn’t end up — I don’t think her team allowed it to move forward,” she explained.
Roberts also pointed to behind-the-scenes factors, suggesting the call likely came down to management decisions at the time.
The timing lines up with a complicated period in Spears’ life, as she was navigating major personal and legal changes, including the early phase of her conservatorship.
Now, the conversation is resurfacing as the Pussycat Dolls step back into the spotlight. After splitting in 2010 and calling off their 2020 reunion tour due to the pandemic, the group is gearing up for a North American tour more than a decade later.
Meanwhile, a legal dispute between Nicole Scherzinger and founder Robin Antin tied to that canceled tour was officially resolved in 2024.
