Chadwick Boseman’s Widow Shares What Fans Never Knew During Black Panther Premiere Run

Chadwick Boseman is once again making headlines after an emotional interview with his widow, Simone Ledward-Boseman, who became tearful while opening up about a powerful moment in his life that fans never got to witness.

During her appearance on the Today show on March 20, she shared that when Black Panther premiered in 2018, Boseman was actually in remission from cancer—a deeply personal milestone that remained private at the time.

Speaking with Craig Melvin, Simone reflected on that chapter as both beautiful and emotionally heavy to revisit. “It was a beautiful year,” she said, holding back tears. “It’s harder to talk about the good times than it is the bad.”

She shared that while the world was celebrating the cultural wave of Black Panther, she and Chadwick Boseman were quietly honoring a personal victory behind closed doors.

This revelation adds deeper meaning to a defining moment in modern cinema. Black Panther wasn’t just a box office hit—it became a global cultural phenomenon, with audiences embracing Boseman’s T’Challa far beyond the big screen. At the time, however, very few people knew he had been privately battling colon cancer since 2016.

Simone recalled how the film’s massive success aligned with a moment of personal relief. “Panther came out in February, to see how deeply, deeply and globally impactful that film was, I just don’t have any words for it,” she said. “He was just so deserving of all the success.”

She added that their celebrations held a deeper, more personal meaning: “It did feel like, you know, they didn’t know we were celebrating that he had a clear scan, but we were celebrating that too. It felt like we got another chance.”

Boseman chose to keep his diagnosis private throughout his career, continuing to take on major roles while undergoing treatment. Simone explained that this decision reflected who he was at his core.

“What’s more important about Chad is the way that he lived,” she said. “The fact that he wouldn’t let cancer get in the way of what he was here to do, let that be the lesson.”

His cancer returned in 2019, and Boseman passed away on Aug. 28, 2020, at just 43 years old. Since then, his impact has continued to be celebrated, including a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

His legacy was further honored in November 2025 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony brought together close collaborators like Ryan Coogler and Viola Davis, with Simone accepting the recognition on his behalf.
