Chance The Rapper Scores Small Victory in Ongoing Case Against Former Manager

The jury’s decision in Pat Corcoran’s unpaid commissions case against Chance The Rapper didn’t result in any major penalties for either side.

Chance The Rapper has seen several shifts in his career over the years, and his latest chapter involves his former manager, Pat “The Manager” Corcoran. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a jury ruled slightly in Chance’s favor in their dispute over unpaid commissions and royalties — but only by a small margin.

For context, Corcoran filed a lawsuit in November of 2020, accusing the rapper of withholding payments he was owed. In response, Chance filed a countersuit seeking $1 million in damages.

Both cases were merged into one trial in Cook County, which ran for about two weeks. The jury ultimately decided that Corcoran failed to prove that Chance owed him $3.8 million. However, when it came to Chance’s countersuit, he was awarded just $35 in damages.

Jurors also reportedly suggested that Corcoran hand over the ChanceRaps.com domain, which he had been using to sell merchandise.

“I claim victory in the name of the Lord,” the Secret Santa rapper said following the verdict.

Meanwhile, Corcoran’s attorney, Jay Scharkey, responded: “We respect the jury’s decision, but the message to music managers is clear: Get it in writing. The jury award of $35 speaks to how seriously the jury viewed Chance’s case.”

For those who may not know, Pat Corcoran managed Chance The Rapper from 2012 through 2020, parting ways shortly after the release of Chance’s 2019 album The Big Day. Corcoran argued that a “sunset clause” entitled him to continue receiving payments for three years after their split.

However, the two reportedly never had a formal written agreement. Chance’s legal team accused Corcoran of mismanaging business matters, acting in his own interest, and falsely claiming the existence of a “sunset clause.” On the other side, Corcoran’s lawyers maintained that he hadn’t been properly compensated for the work he put in.

Now, with the case wrapped up, attention turns to what’s next for the “Touch The Ground” artist as he leaves this legal dispute behind. Both Chance and Corcoran have already gone their separate ways, but this verdict finally marks a true closing chapter in their long-running conflict.
