Mike WiLL Made-It still isn’t over how one of the biggest hits of the 2010s came together.
In a recent chat with Bag Fuel, the super producer spoke about how French Montana ended up on “Unforgettable,” a track that was originally centered around Swae Lee. Even though the song went on to become a massive global hit, Mike WiLL Made-It made it clear he wasn’t pleased with how everything played out.
“It wasn’t even Swae calling me… it was really like me just seeing it on the internet, leaked,” he shared, recalling the moment he first came across French’s version. “It really pissed me off.”
According to him, the track was never meant to be a French Montana release. Mike WiLL explained that the record was being developed in-house, with no plans to pass it around or bring in another artist. Instead, things unfolded without the level of communication he expected. Despite having a prior relationship with French, he said there was no warning before the version with a new verse surfaced online.
“The fact that bro ain’t reach out to me… it was no conversation,” he said. “It was just like, ‘Oh my God, this shit is hot, I’m going to put my verse on here and leak it.'”
He added, “It’s almost like… you just bought this new jewelry… and then boom, you pull up and I’m outside with that shit on.”
Even though “Unforgettable” became one of French Montana’s biggest hits — climbing near the top of the charts and going multi-platinum — Mike WiLL Made-It made it clear his issue goes beyond just the success of the record.
“It ain’t about money… I’m a businessman and I’m a man,” he said. “Out of respect… you can have that conversation with me if you’re going to do it.”
He also highlighted the business side of things, explaining that the track could have stayed within his own label instead of ending up elsewhere.
“That was supposed to be one of Ear Drummers’ assets,” he said, referencing his imprint.
The tension recently came back up after French Montana suggested the song wouldn’t have reached the same level without him — a statement Mike WiLL called “the ultimate slap in the face.”
“How you gonna say the song wouldn’t have been that big without you?” he questioned. “Don’t nobody know your verse… why not big up Swae Lee?”
To add another twist, French Montana recently shared that despite the song’s huge success — being certified 11x Platinum by the RIAA — he hasn’t actually earned money from “Unforgettable,” pointing to the structure of his earlier label deal as the reason.
