J. Cole Says Streaming Platforms Have Shifted How People Value Music

J. Cole is raising questions about how today’s listeners connect with music, arguing that streaming has lowered the standard for how people form opinions on albums.

During a recent appearance on Lost in Vegas, the rapper reflected on how the shift from purchasing music to streaming has reshaped the listening experience—and, in his view, watered down meaningful criticism.

“What I don’t like right now is… you pay your $10 or $15 a month, you got every song in the world,” Cole said. “We already undervalue it.”

He went on to compare that level of access to earlier times, when fans had to intentionally invest in an album to hear it.

“If I didn’t like an album when I bought that sh*t on CD… I got the right to not like this, because I spent $15.99,” he added. “Now I can have a conversation with somebody else that spent their $15.99.”

J. Cole went on to say that streaming has erased that sense of commitment, making it easier for people to jump into conversations about projects they don’t genuinely connect with.

“You don’t even care about this artist… you just see a conversation happening and you want to be a part of it,” he explained. “There’s no barrier of entry for anyone to experience the music.”

According to Cole, that lack of real investment often leads to shallow reactions instead of true appreciation. He reflected on a time when listening to music felt more intentional and shared, rather than being shaped by online chatter.

“Back in the days… they only had the option of listening with their heart,” he said. “They buy the record, put it on… it was a full-on experience.”

Rather than instantly critiquing or debating online, Cole added that listeners were more focused on simply taking the music in.

“They didn’t sit around like, ‘I think he could have shaved off five songs,’” he said. “Nah… they just like, ‘Wow. Look what we got.’”
