YNW Melly Skips His Latest Court Status Hearing

After yet another delay, YNW Melly’s double-murder retrial is now set to begin in January of 2027.

According to NBC Miami, the rapper declined to appear in court on Tuesday for a status hearing tied to scheduling a new motion about the terms of his pretrial release. During the session, the judge locked in April 30 as the date when Melly and his legal team will argue for his release on bond. This development follows prosecutors dropping several charges against him.

Those dismissed charges included tampering with a witness, directing criminal gang activity, criminal solicitation to commit murder, and conspiracy to tamper with a witness in a capital felony case. YNW Melly was initially arrested in 2019 in connection to a double-murder, with authorities alleging he was responsible for the deaths of YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser. The case previously ended in a mistrial in 2023. The dropped allegations were linked to claims that Melly attempted to influence a witness not to testify during the trial.

Melly’s lawyers, Drew Findling and Carol Haughwout, addressed the state’s decision to drop the charges in a statement shared with XXL back in January. “On behalf of Jamell Demons, we welcome the dismissal of the alleged tampering and gang-related charges in court this morning,” they said. “As his newly retained legal team, it became clear to us right away that no crimes had taken place. Unfortunately, for 652 days while these charges were active, the State did not reach that same conclusion until the brink of trial.”

They continued, “We now look forward to seeking Mr. Demons’ release from custody, where he has been held under extraordinarily restrictive conditions for far too long based on premises the State has now abandoned.”

Last month, Melly’s legal team made their fourth push to secure his release from jail, pointing to what they described as the “emergence of additional evidence.” They also argued that he has “endured flagrantly restrictive, dehumanizing conditions in pretrial detention.” At this point, his trial remains scheduled to begin in January of 2027.
