Swae Lee is setting the record straight when it comes to his political stance.
The Rae Sremmurd star recently appeared on The Way Up with Angela Yee, where he made it clear he doesn’t align himself with politics—especially not with supporters of Donald Trump.
Speculation about his political views started after he walked back earlier remarks about Kamala Harris and admitted he didn’t vote in the last U.S. presidential election.
“They can’t crucify you for having an opinion,” Lee said at around the 23:10 mark. “Everybody got their opinion. You can disagree. It’s cool to disagree. And my eyes can be open just like anybody else’s.”
Angela Yee also noted that dealing with the backlash couldn’t be easy, especially as Lee is currently promoting his new album, Same Difference.
He admitted it “can be” difficult at times, but said it’s really just “a small crowd” criticizing him—though he acknowledged that “some” of those critics are actually his own fans.
“So you’re not MAGA?” Angela Yee asked.
“Yeah,” Swae Lee responded, confirming he isn’t. “I seen that’s where they jump to an assumption. … I get why they mad, but then they took it the next level. ‘Oh, you MAGA.’ … I turned down money from MAGA. That’s what they don’t know. MAGA was trying to get me to campaign and do all that shit. ‘Come out, Swae, perform,’ after the tweet. They assumed that I was MAGA too.”
He went on to explain, “I like certain things from both sides, and I dislike certain things from both sides.”
The discussion around his political stance first picked up in July 2024, when he advised fans not to vote for Kamala Harris. “Do not vote for Kamala!!! Do your research on that whole camp,” he tweeted at the time.
The backlash was swift, which he later addressed during an appearance on The Breakfast Club. “At the time I disagreed with her, but I definitely will retract that statement,” he said.
When asked what led to that tweet, Lee explained he had been reacting to things he saw that didn’t sit right with him. “I started doing my own research and just looking at actual policies,” he said.
He also revealed he didn’t vote in the 2024 presidential election and shared his thoughts on the current political climate. “What’s going on now is fucked up,” Lee said, before referencing Donald Trump. “That’s why I never even stood with bro either.”
After his comments on The Breakfast Club, one X user labeled him a “coward ass bitch” and reposted what appeared to be an old tweet showing support for Trump.
“You better go look at the things trump did for blacks he’s actually done more than Biden and 80% of others the media portrays it one way the facts are right there to access I will make a list tomorrow if you need…I used to not pay attention but that last sleepy guy did damage,” Swae appeared to write in 2024, around the same time he urged fans not to support Harris.
