Mariah Carey Puts Iconic ‘MTV Cribs’ Tribeca Penthouse on the Market for $27M

Mariah Carey is saying goodbye to one of New York City’s most iconic celebrity homes.

According to The New York Times, the Grammy-winning star has listed her longtime Tribeca penthouse for $27 million—almost 30 years after purchasing it and turning it into the setting for one of the most memorable episodes of MTV Cribs.

Mariah Carey originally bought the top three floors of the 18-story Franklin Tower condo back in 1999 for $9 million. She later merged the units into a massive 12,728-square-foot triplex, complete with eight bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and three half-bathrooms.

The home also boasts a 1,100-square-foot rooftop terrace offering sweeping views of the Hudson River, the Empire State Building, and the Manhattan skyline.

The penthouse became a true pop culture moment in 2002 when Mariah Carey opened it up for an episode of MTV Cribs. With six outfit changes and a full walkthrough of what she called her “favorite” rooms, the episode went on to become one of the show’s most replayed—and helped solidify both the home and Carey as icons of early-2000s luxury.

The space was designed by legendary interior decorator Mario Buatta, famously known as the “Prince of Chintz.” He styled the penthouse with Art Deco-inspired touches, soft neutral palettes, and a signature butterfly theme woven throughout—from cabinet handles to bed accents. The motif paid homage to Carey’s 1997 album Butterfly.

“We put them wherever we could,” Mario Buatta told Architectural Digest at the time. “There are butterfly handles on the cabinets in the bedroom, and butterflies are woven into the bed hangings.” He added that the motif even extended to bathroom soap and kitchen tiles.

Some of the home’s standout features are still intact. The 38-foot-long primary bathroom includes a lounge area, a crystal chandelier, a television, and a jetted tub.

Elsewhere, a theater space once dubbed the “Mermaid Room” showcases an aquarium and an underwater-inspired aesthetic. The rooftop terrace has since been toned down, though a metallic butterfly tray still sits within a Moroccan-style seating area.

During her MTV Cribs tour, Mariah Carey explained her preference for softer tones, saying, “I have enough jarring things that happen to me on a daily basis. We don’t need that at home.”

The penthouse also marked her first New York residence following her split from former husband and music executive Tommy Mottola.

The listing comes as public records reveal Carey has taken on significant loans tied to the property over the years, with Realtor.com estimating around $18.6 million in debt connected to the penthouse. Representatives for Carey and the listing brokers have declined to comment.
