YNW Melly’s murder retrial is officially locked in to begin on its previously scheduled date, September 10.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, a Florida judge recently refused to delay the proceedings despite ongoing appeals-related issues. Jury selection will kick off on September 10, with opening arguments currently slated for September 16.
Melly’s first trial wrapped up in July 2023 without a verdict, as the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous decision over the 2018 shooting deaths of Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams.
Since then, the case has faced numerous delays. In August 2023, Melly reportedly mouthed something about “going home” to his lawyer during court proceedings following a postponement. The next month, a judge denied him bond, citing a strong presumption of guilt based on the prosecution’s case.
Melly also filed a complaint in late 2023 over alleged mistreatment while in custody under the Broward Sheriff’s Office. And earlier this year, he was name-dropped by Kendrick Lamar on “Euphoria,” which prompted a response from the rapper himself. “I’m a household name, just for the wrong shit,” he told TMZ.
Adding to the legal weight, Melly also faces two civil lawsuits from the families of YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser.
