On the Tuesday, July 15 episode of Good Morning America, Miley Cyrus opened up about why she’s stepping away from touring—despite dropping a new album, Something Beautiful.
It’s been over a decade since the pop star last hit the road for an album tour. Her 2014 Bangerz tour took her across the globe, but now, at 32, the “Flowers” hitmaker is shedding light on why she’s no longer interested in life on the road.
“I do have the physical ability, and I have the opportunity to tour,” Miley said. “I wish I had the desire, but I don’t.”
She went on to explain that the touring lifestyle just doesn’t align with her well-being. “I also don’t think there’s actually an infrastructure that supports artists,” she added. “The artists like Prince, that are not here today, that lived such a high-intensity lifestyle. You’re out on the road, and it’s hard to maintain sobriety when you’re on the road, which is a really important pillar of stability in my life. Not only losing their life but losing their minds.”
Miley has long been open about her journey with sobriety. She previously shared in an Apple Music interview that she gave up marijuana in 2017 and stopped drinking alcohol in 2020.
On Good Morning America, she also spoke on how touring takes a toll on her mentally. “You have so many thousands of people screaming at you, so there’s dopamine, you’re feeling a lot of love, and then you totally crash at the end of the show,” she said. “You start thinking that one person loving you is not enough. It needs to be 10,000, it needs to be 80,000.”
Fans were quick to show support for Miley Cyrus, applauding her honesty and self-awareness.
“At least she is honest about not wanting to tour while some artists just show up uninterested for the sake of money,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Over on Reddit, another user chimed in, “I would not want to be touring now either if I had embarked on a full-time career at the age of twelve.” Someone else added, “As much as I’d be thrilled to see her perform live, I can only imagine how exhausting and soul crushing touring could potentially be, especially if you’re not really into it.”
Miley’s latest album, Something Beautiful, dropped this past May.
