Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have settled into a co-parenting routine that works well for their family.
In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Carey shared how she and Cannon work hard to ensure their twins, Monroe and Moroccan, transition smoothly between both parents.
“How do I say this? They spend time with him, and they have a good time; they spend time with me, and they have a good time,” Carey said. “I want to make sure I’m always fair about the situation because it’s tough to grow up with divorced parents.”
Cannon previously told PEOPLE about their co-parenting dynamic, explaining, “There’s no hard feelings and ill will. Ultimately, it’s about putting the kids first and making sure they have the best childhood they could possibly have.”
Carey and Cannon first sparked romance in early 2008 when Cannon appeared in Carey’s “Bye Bye” music video. After just a few months of dating, they married in a private ceremony in the Bahamas.
Following eight years together, the pair divorced. Cannon later admitted that, as much as he loved Carey, it was challenging to step back while married to one of the world’s biggest pop stars.
“I got married in my 20s to the biggest star in the world,” Cannon shared during an October appearance on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast. “I would lie up at night thinking, ‘Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life’s supposed to be?’”
He added, “Then, when you have children and the hierarchy of man’s s*** is like, ‘Wait, I’m carrying the purse, the diaper bag, and I’m standing on the corner waiting. She’s rocking being all the alpha that she is.’”
Cannon continues to host and produce Wild ‘N Out, while Carey is preparing to release her 16th studio album, Here For It All, set to drop on September 26.
