Doja Cat Channels the ’80s in Sultry Visual for New Single “Jealous Type”

Doja Cat just dropped her new single “Jealous Type,” complete with a slick, retro ’80s-inspired video — watch it above.

Produced by Jack Antonoff and Y2K, the track is the latest preview from her upcoming fifth album Vie, set to drop September 26.

On the song, Doja calls out her man for not showing her off to his ex, a red flag that triggers her jealous side.

“I said, ‘You wanna do what now with who?’/ I don’t need a pin-drop or a text tonight,” she raps. “I ain’t even coming out with you/ You don’t wanna show me off to your ex or your friends tonight/ N***a, you must be on Molly /’Cause y’all ain’t kick it when we started up/ And if she really was a friend like you said she was/ I would’ve been locked in, but I called your bluff, ha.”

Directed by Boni Mata and filmed in Los Angeles, the video leans fully into the ’80s vibe. From pouring Patron into a vintage champagne flute and flipping on an old-school hifi system, to watching home movies of herself on a reel-to-reel projector, Doja brings the retro aesthetic to life. She even shares the screen with a second version of herself — the two start dancing on opposite sides of a limo window before meeting up on the hood of the car.

With anticipation for Vie building, Doja told Zane Lowe on Apple Music that one of the album’s biggest themes is love bombing.

“There’s other things outside of myself that were inspiring me to write about these things,” she said. “I had been in relationships that made me think about things in a different way, and I think naivety is a big part of this album too. I speak about rushing and love bombing in a way. That’s kind of a big one. I think that’s a fun subject to sing about.”

When Zane Lowe asked Doja Cat how she defines love bombing, she explained: “I think sometimes people don’t know that they’re doing it or they do, but giving excessive compliments and gifts right off the bat, that sort of thing.”

She added, “I thought that was a really fun thing to write about. And also being okay with… This is a separate subject, but being okay with when someone finds someone else and understanding that and taking value from it as a lesson, essentially … And understanding that you did something good there and that’s a good thing, that you did something good for that person.”

Doja also revealed that therapy played a huge role in shaping Vie. “This album really grew from my sessions in therapy and being so gung-ho on being there twice a week and doing it and learning about the human experience and how our brains function subconsciously and consciously,” she said.

Along with the album release, Doja Cat is gearing up for her first-ever tour across New Zealand and Australia. The Ma Vie World Tour kicks off November 18 in Auckland at Spark Arena, with stops in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Manila, Tokyo, and more before wrapping December 21 in Kaohsiung.

Tickets for the tour are available now.
