Emma Stone has revealed that she’s a firm believer in aliens.
The Oscar-winning star made the admission on Thursday (Aug. 28) during a press conference for her new film Bugonia at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, alongside director Yorgos Lanthimos.
When asked if she believed in a “higher intelligence looking upon us,” Stone gave an unexpected answer.
“I don’t know about looking down on us,” she said at the one-hour, 24-minute mark of the video. “One of my favorite people that has ever lived is Carl Sagan, and I watched his show Cosmos and fell madly in love with his philosophy and his science and how brilliant he seems to be.”
She went on to say, “And I think he very deeply believed that the idea that we are alone in this vast expanse of the universe—truly, not that we’re being watched—but that we’re alone out here is a pretty narcissistic thing to think.
“So yes, I’m coming out with it. I believe in aliens. Thank you,” she finished, sparking laughter throughout the press conference.
Interestingly, earlier in the session, another reporter had asked Stone how she manages fame “without turning into an alien.”
“How do you know I’m not an alien?” Stone joked, before shifting to a more thoughtful response about navigating fame.
“There’s me, and then there’s like me here, if that makes sense,” she explained. “I separate the two in my mind a little bit. … It’s just different things to keep myself sane, I guess.”
Her latest film, Bugonia, is set to arrive in theaters on Oct. 24.
