ASAP Rocky is set to make a bold return to the silver screen as the lead in Spike Lee’s highly anticipated film, Highest 2 Lowest. The movie, a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, brings together an all-star cast, including Denzel Washington, Ice Spice, Jeffrey Wright, and Ilfenesh Hadera.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
In an interview with Deadline, Spike Lee emphasized that this isn’t a direct remake but a reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s thriller. In the original, Toshiro Mifune played a shoemaker caught in a web of crime. Lee’s version updates the story, casting Washington as a powerful music mogul with a legendary ear for talent.
“This is not a remake,” Lee explained. “It’s a reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s great film.” The movie will mark the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, their first since 2006’s Inside Man. Other iconic projects from the duo include Malcolm X and He Got Game.
ASAP Rocky’s Role and Rising Film Career
ASAP Rocky, who plays a character named Yung Felon, continues to expand his acting resume. His previous roles include his 2015 debut in Dope, 2016’s Zoolander 2, and earlier this year in Rihanna’s short film Born to Steal: Yours, Mine, Ours. His involvement in Highest 2 Lowest was first hinted at when set photos emerged.
Ice Spice’s Acting Debut
Rapper Ice Spice also makes her big-screen debut in the film. Her involvement was announced earlier this year, adding another layer of intrigue to an already dynamic cast.
