Doja Cat is clearing up how she defines her sound.
In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, the Grammy winner was asked which genre best sums up her music. She didn’t hesitate with her answer:
“Pop. I think I’m a rapper who makes pop music,” Doja said.
Doja’s genre clarification comes right as fans gear up for her next chapter. Her highly anticipated album Vie is set to drop on Sept. 26, marking her first full-length project since 2023’s Scarlet.
While she’s kept most details under wraps, Doja has hinted that the album will spotlight her growth as both a lyricist and performer. Speaking to V Magazine, she revealed that Vie leans back into her pop roots while pulling from the sounds of the ’70s.
“I wanted to play with that nostalgia by using these Lo-Fi sounds and samples and things that reminded you of something from your childhood, but it wasn’t on the nose ’80s,” Doja explained.
Her focus on finishing the album even led her to cancel her slot at this year’s Austin City Limits Festival. In her Instagram Stories, she told fans the decision came down to timing:
“When I made the commitment, I didn’t know exactly when Vie would be released. I’ve been working on finalizing the album, making videos, taking the time to put together an album campaign that I am really excited about, and it’s become clear to me that I cannot give you guys the show you deserve within this time frame.”
