Nike is continuing its celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with the release of the Yardrunners 5.0 Air Force 1s. This year’s designs, crafted by inaugural Yardrunners class members Kahlana Barfield Brown and Dex Robinson, honor their alma maters: Howard University and Virginia Union University.
Each pair is more than just a sneaker — it’s a tribute to HBCU history, culture, and pride.
- Brown’s Design: Featuring a white and brown colorway, her version represents all HBCUs, with red accents as a nod to Howard.
- Robinson’s Design: His pair is elevated with a premium pony hair upper inspired by Virginia Union University’s panther mascot. VUU-themed charms on the laces add an extra touch of school spirit.
“These aren’t just sneakers — they’re a love letter to every Black student who’s ever walked The Yard,” Brown explained. “From the deep brown hues of our melanin to the echoes of our heritage, this design carries the soul of our HBCUs. It’s a tribute to the generations who built our legacy brick by brick, the history that grounds us, and the excellence we carry into the world.”
The Yardrunners 5.0 Air Force 1s dropped today, Dec. 18, at select Nike retailers for $120. If you miss the first drop, don’t worry — they’ll also release on Nike’s SNKRS app on Dec. 20.
These sneakers aren’t just footwear; they’re a statement of pride, unity, and the rich legacy of HBCUs. Don’t miss your chance to own a pair!
