Michael Che Says Kanye West Later Apologized for His ‘SNL’ Rant

Michael Che revealed that he and Kanye West eventually squashed their issues years after Ye went off on him during a 2018 Saturday Night Live appearance.

Back then, West used his post-show rant to praise then-president Donald Trump and criticized SNL for having a “Black comedian” — referring to Che — make jokes about Bill Cosby. The two later crossed paths after the taping, a moment now highlighted in the new Kanye documentary In Whose Name?

But during a September 25 sit-down on SiriusXM’s The Bonfire SXM, Che shared that Ye eventually made things right, admitting he apologized to him “years later” after realizing he “wasn’t behaving like himself” during that 2018 taping.

“I remember like everybody — we were trying so hard to accommodate him,” Che recalled around the 4:45 mark of the interview.

“We were trying very hard. And then when that happened and he made it seem like we was bullying him, I was like, ‘Why would you say that? Like, what happened that made you feel that way?’” Che remembered.

The comedian said the next time he ran into Ye was during Eddie Murphy’s SNL hosting gig, when “every Black person in Hollywood” showed up. With his dressing room serving as a green room, Che was passing through the hallway when he crossed paths with the Bully rapper.

“And I’m walking through the hallway and [Ye’s] coming out the elevator bay and as soon as he sees me, he goes, ‘I owe you an apology,’” Che recalled.

“I hadn’t seen him in years. I didn’t even know if he remembered that that happened because he was saying so much. And he was like, ‘I owe you an apology.’ And we talked and I never brought it up again.”

Consequence, who was also around at the time, previously revealed that he initially suggested Che and Ye “reconvene,” before warning things might escalate to “go outside.”
