Wendy Osefo has become the latest “Real Housewives” star to run into legal trouble after allegedly fabricating a robbery while vacationing.
According to TMZ, the 41-year-old “Real Housewives of Potomac” star and her husband, Eddie, have been charged with criminal fraud in Maryland. Osefo is facing 16 charges in total, including seven felonies for allegedly making false or misleading statements involving fraud over $300. She’s also been hit with a misdemeanor charge for allegedly lying to police.
The charges stem from an incident over a year ago when the couple reported their Finksburg, Maryland home had been burglarized while they were away in Jamaica. They claimed thieves made off with designer handbags and jewelry.
However, court documents obtained by TMZ allege that investigators later found inconsistencies in their story — including an Instagram post showing Osefo wearing a diamond ring she had reported stolen. Police also say the couple returned several of the supposedly stolen items to the store for a full refund prior to the alleged break-in.
The Osefos reportedly filed an insurance claim valuing their losses at around $450,000.
Osefo, who is a Johns Hopkins University professor with a Ph.D., joined “The Real Housewives of Potomac” in Season 5. Her co-star, Karen Huger, was released early from prison last month following a DUI-related conviction.
